The Period Form
HOW TO WRITE A MELODY 1: Period - An Easy Formula for Better Melodies and Themes with Balance
- a “period” meaning a length of time
- has a circular feel; or like a ball going into the air, then coming back down
- “Basic Idea” – “Contrasting Idea” – “Basic Idea” – “Cadence” (8 bars)
- suggests making the contrasting idea and cadence “opposite”, i.e. if you land on the V chord in one, maybe land on the I chord in the other
